When I first started doing color corrections, I never really knew where to start, how to manage my time effectively and what types of colors to use that would give me the results I desired.
When I first saw my clients hair I had a mini heart attack. Her previous color had been very uneven, unblended and choppy. You can see the harsh transition area between her natural grown out hair and her blonde. Below that you notice that there is a dark band of hair color that wasn't entirely saturated through during the blonding process.
My MAIN focus areas were as follows:
1. Dark existing color band
2. Blonde line of regrowth
3. Grey coverage
4. Ends of the hair (those were more damaged so I knew they would take the color faster and darker, so I leave those till the end)
I used Redken Flashlift with 10 vol in the back 2 sections and 20 vol in the front sections. In each lightener bowl I put ph bonder to ensure that the hair kept it's integrity. I did diagonal baby lights in a v shape going up the back of her head. Once I got to the sides I did diagonal sections going up to the hairline. I used the slicing method to get the maximum lightness and to correct the line. Between foils I used shades eq 8na, 7n and 6gi to blend out the line even more.
After letting that sit on, I washed and then took her back to the chair to root smudge and tone.
I applied the root smudge about 1 inch down using 4ng in Redken Gels and 10 vol. Normally I only use shades eq to root smudge but I wanted to maximize the longevity of her color and I wanted to make sure the line was completely blended out. Through the mids and ends I applied 9n, 8n, 9p and 8v in shades eq. I wanted to create a blonde that had a bit of ash to it but wasn't too overboard.
All of our concerns were taken care of one step at a time, the whole process took 4 hours:
Consultation: 10 minutes
Application: 2 hours
Processing time: 20 minutes
Wash: 5 minutes
Root smudge and toner application: 15 minutes
Processing time: 15 minutes
Wash: 10 minutes
Haircut: 15 min
Blowdry and style: 30
