Purple shampoo is a necessity for anyone who desires to have that light, bright blonde or just wants to achieve a less warm or brassy look. Purple shampoo is what I recommend to all my clients that lighten their hair in some way. The frequency of use is just depended on what outcome you are seeking.
Personally, with my hair, I have very dark hair with about level 7-8 balayaged highlights. I personally use a blue shampoo every single time I wash my hair which is typically about once every 7-9 days (blue shampoo is just a little more intense than purple shampoo and is better suited for darker hair that may have more brass or orangey tones).
Depending on how often you wash your hair will determine how often to use the purple shampoo. Typically I recommend starting with using the shampoo once a week and if you feel that you hair needs more, than try washing a little more frequently.
When using the purple shampoo, if you have gone several days between washes, wash your hair with a regular shampoo first to remove excess oils and dirt so that the purple shampoo can just go in and tone out the warm tones. Then apply the purple shampoo starting at the roots and bringing it down from there. Normally, your hair will have the most warmth in the roots and midshaft areas because they haven't been lightened as much as the ends. Then apply to the ends of your hair. Leave on for 3-5 minutes for regular maintenance and for extra brass control leave on for 5-10 minutes.
My favorite purple shampoos are:
-Tressa Watercolors Silver
-Pureology Best Blonde
-Redken Color Extend Purple shampoo
